Statement of Intent

Statement of Intent :

My fantasy TV drama - called 'Wanted' - will be the opening 2 minutes in the first episode of Series 1 and will appear on Amazon Prime. The narrative begins with the antagonists sitting on the ground chanting to himself with candles (mis-en-scene) in front of him to emphasise his eerie, villainous aura to the audience. He then receives an anonymous phone call which leads him to embrace his evil where is wearing a cape (communicating the fantasy genre through his costume connoting to darkness) and is jogging towards something the audience is unaware of. The disequilibrium (Todorov) begins when Lilly (protagonist, a curious female, teenage hero) chases Rodger (the villain, a character who is meant to be hidden from the world) through a forest which will be one of the filming locations. I will use a close-up shot of Lilly’s face when she is chasing the villain to emphasise to the audience the desperation Lilly feels to catch this wanted man. I will incorporate non- diegetic sound such as a suspenseful soundtrack being played in tense moments such as the chase scene to emphasise enigma and action codes (Barthes). I will also include diegetic sound through dialogue when the characters are speaking to highlight the recognition of disruption to the narrative.

Gender stereotypes will be reinforced when Rodger is an a dark isolated setting performing rituals, communicating his powerful and dominating characteristics to the audience as the main villain. Generally, in many Hollywood Blockbuster films the main characters and villains are seen to be males as they are dominating and leaders emphasising their power not only in movies but reflecting this stereotype back into real-life. However gender stereo types are subverted in my episode as Lilly confronts the male antagonist emphasising her dominant and brave characteristics (usually seen in men) as woman are typically seen being the 'damsel in distress' rather than being the heroine. It also represents the BAME community as all the characters will be South Asian which subverts regular stereotypes and brings out the lack of opportunity they have when it comes to having main and powerful roles in fantasy TV drama.

My TV drama creates a sense of enigma during tense moments like the disruption of narrative for families as they tempt to know what will happen in the upcoming episodes of this series. The characters range from different age groups including a teenage girl as the protagonist which emphasises personal identity (Blumer and Katz) as older children/teenagers feel like they are going through the disruption of the narrative with her and experience her journey together. The fantasy genre may also help the families 'escape from reality' as they experience the narrative through with the mysterious and unnatural characters who would not normally be seen in an everyday setting (diversion).
