Advertising: Key conventions

 1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.

  • Setting / colour scheme : The packaging is presented in a popping red colour which would attract the consumers attraction when it's put on a shelf contrasting with the other packages. The setting is set in a light blue sky which could connote to a child-like treat as the blue could suggest the innocence and purity of a child. The colour scheme is a bold and eye catching as it shows a rainbow in the center, which could supposedly have to do with the recent awareness to the LGBTQ+ community and a subtle way to bring it to the audiences attention.
  • Slogan : The slogan 'taste the rainbow' makes the products seem like an explosion of fruity sweets in your mouth which makes it more irresistible especially to a younger or teenage audience.

  • 2) What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of persuasive techniques listed above?

The USP of the skittles advert is the the idea that it is mainly meant towards kids or young children. This is because of the range of colours shown across the advert, with the main theme being revolved around rainbows. This theme connotes to things like "a good luck", suggesting that this product is something everyone must try and something that everyone will like.
